CHIEFTAINS PLAY WELL IN THE TRAVERSE CITY TOURNEY

January 1st-3rd: Utica didn't let a short bench bother them as they split the tournament with one win, one loss, and one tie. In the first game against St. John's Jesuit, Chris Schwarzkoff scored from Chad Jetts to tie the score early at one. But the Chieftains let this one get away from them falling to a 9-1 final score.
In the next game, the Chieftains bounced back against the Bay Reps. Utica came out determined to play defense in this one. Scoring first was Tommy Piccirillo on a beautiful goal assisted by Joey Johnson. This goal was so nice it made the highlights on the Traverse City News (click link
http://www.9and10news.com/category/story/?id=147170 ). The Chieftains would make it 2-0 when Casey Pawlak found the back of the net with assists going to Tyler Benoot and Matt Dasin. The Reps would make it close getting it's only goal of the game. Utica would score one more before the end of the second period with a power play goal from Chris Schwarzkoff with an assist from Joey Johnson. The Chieftains would add one more when Dave Burke got the puck to winger Matt Dasin who banked it off the boards and straight into the empty net.
In the third and final game, the Chieftains would play tough against Saginaw Heritage with the final score ending in a 2-2 tie. After giving Saginaw a two goal lead, the Chieftains would score both of their goals late in the 3rd period. With just over 4 minutes to play, Utica would go on the power play and pull their goalie making it a six on four. It took the Chieftains just 28 seconds to score. Chad Jetts found Casey Pawlak all alone in front of the net and he buried it high above the Heritage goalie. Dave Burke also assisted. With just under 2 minutes to play, Tommy Piccirillo and Chad Jetts cycled low until Chris Schwarzkoff got open. Chad Jetts put it right on the tape of Chris' stick and he made no mistake putting it between the goalies pads. Regulation would end 2-2 and after an 8 minute overtime, the score would remain 2-2.

PENALITIES HURT THE CHIEFTAINS AS THEY FALL TO DAKOTA 3-2

December 20th: Nine penalties contributed to Utica's struggle against Dakota with the Chieftains coming up one goal short in an intense 3-2 final score. The Chieftains scored first when Nick Drenchko deflected a Chris Schwarzkoff shot high over the Cougar goalie's shoulder. After falling behind 2-1, Utica would tie the score when Luigi Pizzo banged home a goal after Chris Schwartzkoff had set up a shot by Nick Drenchko that rebounded back out to Luigi. Unfortunately, Dakota would score once more that would not be answered by the Chieftains.

Our next game is Wednesday, January 7th, at 5:20 PM, against Waterford Kettering at Lakeland Ice Arena.
